Several years ago, a Congolese pastor named Mwema Bertin attended a discipleship seminar led by Barry St. Clair, the man who mentored Lee Grady, founder of The Mordecai Project. A few years later Mwema met Lee when he was visiting Congo. They developed a relationship and Mwema learned about the work of The Mordecai Project. He partnered with us in 2022 to begin a sewing school to help marginalized women. Today that school continues, and many women have received sewing machines and training so they can start their own businesses. They have also been discipled in their faith under the leadership of Mwema and his wife, Jeanine.

We currently rent a building for our sewing school. We hope to expand the work in Nyiragongo to include a permanent women’s center and shelter. The Democratic Republic of Congo is one of the poorest nations in the world, even though it is blessed with many natural resources. Internal conflicts caused by a rebel army have made women particularly vulnerable.
